Forest Bathing

With its roots in the Japanese therapy of Shinrin Yoku dating from the 1980s, Forest Bathing is also described as mindfulness in nature.

It harnesses the power of woodlands through engaging the senses, grounding and meditation. The practice involves slowing down and immersing oneself in the woodland atmosphere to promote relaxation and wellbeing.

Encouraging mindful observation of nature through our five senses has been shown to have physical benefits; reducing stress, balancing blood pressure and boosting your nervous system, whilst also improving mood, increasing happiness, and reducing anxiety and overwhelm by lowering cortisol levels and improving sleep.

Key elements of Forest Bathing include:

  • Slowing down through mindful walking, sitting and treelaxation

  • Mindful observation using your five senses; paying attention to sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures of the woodland

  • Conscious breathing to promote relaxation, inhaling volatile chemicals released by the trees to improve the immune system

  • Connecting with nature, embracing the natural world what it gives us and how we can protect it

Mindfulness & Meditation

Breathwork (Pranayama) and meditation offer an opportunity for inner reflection, learning a variety of techniques leads to an exploration of breath control to promote relaxation and reduce stress.
